Mammon comes from the Syrian word mammona which means riches. It is believed that there was a god of that name. It also occurs in the Gospel as the personification of worldly riches. The original m eaning of the phrase to serve God and Mammon was to try to be righteous and to worship wealth. In modern speech the expression means to be divided between two conflicting principles, to do two incompatible things at a time.
